- UPDATE: BAKEOFF '94
-
- Apologies
- =========
- First, I must apologize for not getting this update out sooner. The
- response to the announcement mail was extensive and required breaking the
- event into two logical events for space and management reasons. Most of
- the logistical details are now covered or in the process, so we'll be
- ready for April 18th. This update should provide the necessary
- information for you to make your travel arrangements.
-
- Reorganization
- ==============
- Most all of the PPP vendors expressed that a solid week of testing would
- be necessary given the number of participants. As such, the PPP event
- will take place for the entire week in a neighboring building. If you are
- interested in attending the PPP bakeoff and did *not* receive the update
- late last week, e-mail bakeoff@microsoft.com and we'll get the PPP event
- details to you.
-
- "Our" week of testing will cover TCP/IP and Windows Sockets: the TCP/IP
- protocol testing, some application layer interoperability testing and
- Windows Sockets matrix testing. We also plan to host a Windows Sockets
- v2.0 discussion on Thursday evening. You are invited to attend all or
- part of the week-long event.
-
- Location
- ========
- The TCP/IP and Windows Sockets testing session will be held in Building 12
- at Microsoft's corporate campus in Redmond. We have a single room which
- holds 200 that we will transform into a lab for the week. The room will
- be open to attendees from 8am to 8pm daily. Equipment will be monitored
- by a security guard on off hours.
-
-
- Equipment Provided by Microsoft Corporation
- ===========================================
- In general, we'll try to provide most of the network, and count on you to
- provide the hardware and software. Items of special interest that
- Microsoft plans to have available:
-
- 10BaseT cables and hubs
- Network analysis stations (and software) for use
- 2 IP Routers (models/versions TBD)
- A system with RFCs online
-
- If this equipment does not meet your needs, or would like to see
- this expanded, please let us know.
-
- Equipment Provided by Vendors
- =============================
- We encourage vendors to bring laptop/portable systems whenever possible to
- ease setup and shipping hassles. Please bring your own power strips and
- TPAUs (if necessary) whenever possible. If you have special needs, be
- sure to let us know.
-
- Shipping
- ========
- We will post equipment shipping details in a forthcoming message.

- Accommodations
- ==============
- You will need to make hotel and travel arrangements directly with any of
- the hotels in the Seattle/Redmond area and your favorite airline. We have
- reserved some rooms at a nearby Residence Inn for attendees:
-
- The Residence Inn
- 14455 NE 29th Place
- Bellevue
- (206) 882-1222
-
- To take advantage of the block, you will need to make reservations by
- April 1, 1994. They are offering a special rate of $89 for studio rooms
- and $103 for executive rooms. Ask for the "Microsoft Interop" block. You
- will be required to guarantee your room.
-
- Testing
- =======
- Our experience and vendor feedback indicates that the most valuable aspect
- of this event will stem from the assembly of engineers and not strict
- testing methods or schedules. We have relaxed our approach of holding a
- structured testing event in favor of a more open and flexible approach.
-
- For the TCP/IP protocol testing, our current thinking is to provide each
- vendor with a spreadsheet: vendor names label the columns, test variations
- label the rows. The variations will be laid out in a "recommended"
- chronology which will mirror the below agenda. Engineers are encouraged
- to fill in as much of "The Grid" as possible each day by testing against
- other vendors' implementations at the event. Vendors are encouraged to
- test any fixes made "on the fly" at any time, rather than trying to follow
- the agenda to the letter. We will do our best to provide the necessary
- network hardware to facilite private vendor->vendor testing of fixes.
- Remember, the grid is intended as a guideline only. We encourage vendors
- to expand their testing beyond these guidelines and use the opportunity to
- test any IP-related protocols that they have in common.
-
- The Windows Sockets testing will be even simplier - first, we want to give
- stack vendors which have not used the WSAT test tool extensively the
- opportunity to use the tool and ask questions of the tool developer(s).
- Like the TCP/IP testing, we will provide a matrix of Applications versus
- Stack implementations with the goal of having everyone fill in as much of
- the matrix as possible before leaving the event.
-
- Guidelines
- ==========
- As much as possible, it has been noted that the agenda should be left
- somewhat flexible. We will have the room from 8am to 8pm everyday. For
- guideline purposes we suggest the following rough scheule:
-
- TCP/IP Setup: Sunday 5pm-8pm, Monday 8am-10am
- Windows Sockets Setup: Wednesday 5pm-8pm
- Lunch breaks: noon-1pm everyday
-
- IP/ICMP/ARP: Monday 10am-2pm
- UDP: Monday 2pm-5pm
- TCP: Tuesday 8am-3pm
- NetBIOS over TCP/IP: Tuesday 1pm-5pm, Wednesday 8am-noon
- DHCP: Wednesday 8am-noon, 1pm-5pm
- FTP: Wednesday 8am-noon
- Telnet: Wednesday 1pm-3pm
- Printing: Wednesday 1pm-5pm
-
- WSAT Windows Sockets testing: Thursday
- Windows Sockets Matrix testing: Thursday-Friday
-
- Special events:
- Tuesday 7pm: Dinner at Thai Kitchen in Bellevue
- Thursday 7pm: Windows Sockets 2.0 discussion
- We also hope to have 2 (optional) 30 minute tutorials on using the network
- analysis tools
-
- This schedule encourages vendors to use any available time to do other
- testing. For example, we're interested in doing some simple ttcp, echo,
- chargen testing against other products and hope to do some programmatic
- TCP/IP testing as well. The overlap in the above "schedule" is
- intentional. Feedback indicates that not all vendors will test all
- protocols and that some vendors will want to spend more time on one
- particular aspect (e.g., DHCP). I won't be surprised if we're kicking out
- some of the DHCP guys on Friday night.
-
- RSVP
- ====
- Although many of you responded to the initial mail, a final RSVP would be
- appreciated. This will help us work out two things before attendees
- arrive: the network setup and the "grids". Please get this information
- back to us ASAP if you plan on attending by mailing the following to
- bakeoff@microsoft.com.

- What's Next
- ============
- You haven't heard the last from us. By this weekend, you should plan on
- receiving mail containing preliminary grid proposals and a network setup.
- We hope that one iteration of these will be sufficient and that they will
- be solid by the first week in April. We'll also finalize the shipping
- details for those of you that can't carryon your systems.
-
- Looking forward to a successful event...
